Check a vehicle’s DVLA change of ownership to see how many previous keepers it has had. This number affects its value and our check lets you verify the seller’s keeper history is accurate. Enter a registration number above and purchase a Silver or Gold Check to get a vehicle’s full keeper history.

What is DVLA Change of Ownership?

DVLA change of ownership is the official process of transferring a vehicle’s registration from the current keeper to a new keeper, ensuring the DVLA records accurately reflect who is responsible for taxing, insuring, and driving the vehicle.

Completing this transfer protects:
  • Buyers: as typically the more keepers a vehicle has had the lower its value. Having full keeper history enables buyers to verify the keeper history reported by the seller.
  • Sellers: prevents the previous keeper from being liable for fines, penalties, or road tax after the sale.

You can complete the change of ownership process online via the DVLA website or using the physical V5C logbook. Further details are below.

Keepership vs Ownership

It’s important to understand the distinction:
  • Keeper: The individual responsible for taxing, insuring, and driving the vehicle. Being the registered keeper does not automatically make you the legal owner.
  • Owner: The person who legally owns the vehicle, typically evidenced through a receipt, bill of sale, or finance agreement.

How to Complete a DVLA Change of Ownership

There are two main ways to transfer a vehicle’s registration:
  1. Online
    • Use the DVLA’s official online service: Sell or transfer a vehicle online
    • Submit seller and buyer details digitally.
    • The buyer receives a new V5C logbook by post, confirming the transfer.
  2. Physical Form (V5C Logbook)
    • Complete the relevant sections of the V5C logbook.
    • The seller posts the completed logbook to DVLA.
    • The buyer receives the updated logbook confirming registration.
    • More guidance: DVLA V5C registration certificate.

FAQ – DVLA Change of Ownership

Can I sell a car without a V5C?

Yes, you can legally sell a car without its V5C logbook, but it is strongly discouraged. Selling without it makes the process more difficult, can lower the car’s value, and will often deter potential buyers.

How long does it take DVLA to update records?

It depends how you notify the DVLA. If you tell the DVLA you’ve sold, transferred or bought a vehicle online then a V5C with the new keeper details could be sent within 3-5 working days. Returning a slip from the paper V5C can lead to wait times of up to 4-6 weeks.

Do I need to update insurance?

Yes, both seller and buyer must notify their insurers of the change in keeper.

Do I need to update insurance?

To correct incorrect information on your V5C registration certificate, complete the relevant sections on your current V5C and send it to the DVLA with supporting evidence and a letter explaining the error. Use Section 1 if you have a newer logbook, or Section 7 for an older one, and you can add notes in the ‘vehicle details’ section for any other changes.
