How Total Car Check works: prices, what's included and FAQs

Total Car Check provides vehicle history checks for cars, vans, motorbikes and other commercial vehicles registered in the UK. You can start with a free check, then choose Silver or Gold for more history before you buy.

In brief:
  • Free check: vehicle details, tax and MOT status. A free account adds full MOT history and a police stolen check.
  • Silver check: adds insurance write-off and stolen records, salvage history, mileage checks and more.
  • Gold check: includes everything in Silver, plus outstanding finance, a valuation and an ex-taxi search.

Prices include VAT. This page explains what each check costs and includes, how the checks work, and what buyers often ask.

What's included in the free car check?

Enter a registration to see the vehicle's:
  • Make and model
  • Fuel type
  • Engine and power
  • Road tax status
  • MOT status and expiry
  • Fuel costs
  • Insurance group
  • Clean Air Zone and London ULEZ compliance
  • Electric vehicle data, for battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars

You can also use our free VIN checker to confirm that a VIN matches the registration.

Create a free account to see the vehicle's full MOT history, including mileage records and advisories recorded at each test, and to run a police stolen check.

More than 52 million free checks were run on Total Car Check in 2025.

What's the difference between Silver and Gold?

A Silver check covers more of the vehicle's recorded history. It checks whether the vehicle has been written off, stolen, salvaged, imported, exported or scrapped. It also includes plate changes, previous keepers and an advanced mileage check.

A Gold check includes everything in Silver, plus outstanding finance and logbook loan checks, a valuation and an ex-taxi search. Gold also includes Experian's guarantee on the finance data, up to £30,000.

If you're buying a car, we recommend Gold. Outstanding finance can be a costly problem for a buyer, and only Gold checks for it.

Is a free car check enough before buying?

A free check confirms the vehicle's details and whether it is taxed and has an MOT. With a free account, it also shows the full MOT history and whether the police have recorded the vehicle as stolen.

A free check does not show whether the vehicle has been written off, has outstanding finance or has mileage readings from sources beyond the MOT. Those checks are included in Silver or Gold.

What do the guarantees cover?

Data covered Cover
Stolen check Up to £10,000
Write-off: categories A and B Up to £3,000
Write-off: categories S, N, C and D Up to £1,500
Outstanding finance Up to £30,000

Silver and Gold checks carry the Total Car Check guarantee on police stolen and insurance write-off data. If data was wrong because of a processing error by Total Car Check, and you lose out after buying the checked vehicle, you may be entitled to make a claim.

Gold checks also carry Experian's guarantee on finance data, up to £30,000.

Both guarantees have conditions. For example, you must buy the check within seven days before buying the vehicle, and other eligibility criteria apply. Read the Total Car Check guarantee and Experian guarantee terms.

Where does Total Car Check get its data?

Our checks draw on data from:
  • DVLA
  • DVSA MOT records
  • The Police National Computer
  • The Motor Insurance Bureau's Vehicle Salvage and Theft Database, formerly known as MIAFTR
  • Experian, for finance data
  • The Vehicle Certification Agency, for fuel economy and CO2 data
  • Garages, dealers, auction houses, leasing companies and finance companies, for additional mileage readings
  • Clean Air Zone and London ULEZ compliance
  • Electric vehicle data, for battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars

See about our checks for more information.

Questions about vehicle history checks

How do I check if a car is stolen?

A free account includes a police stolen check. Silver and Gold checks include this check without needing a free account.

Silver and Gold also check the insurance industry's register for vehicles recorded as stolen by insurers. If a vehicle is recorded as stolen, don’t buy it. Tell the police by calling 101.

Can a car check detect a cloned car?

No. A cloned car carries a copy of another vehicle's registration plate, so a history check will return information about the genuine vehicle the plate is registered to instead.

To help protect yourself:
  • View the car before you buy.
  • Check that the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the seller's V5C logbook and the last four VIN digits shown on a Total Car Check report.
  • Run a free VIN check. It compares the VIN on the vehicle with the VIN associated with its registration in DVLA data. You can do this on a Total Car Check free check page or on our dedicated VIN page.
  • Check the V5C for a "DVL" watermark by holding it up to a light source. V5Cs are sometimes forged by organised criminals selling stolen cloned cars.

How do I check if a car has outstanding finance?

Our Gold check shows whether hire purchase, conditional sale, lease or a logbook loan is recorded against the vehicle, using finance data from Experian.

If finance is outstanding, the lender may have a claim on the car until it is paid off. Ask the seller to settle the finance, and make sure a Gold Check report confirms the car is clear before you pay.

How do I check if a car has been written off?

Silver and Gold checks show whether an insurer has recorded the vehicle as written off, and its category.

Category A and B vehicles must never return to the road. Category S vehicles have structural damage; category N vehicles have non-structural damage. Both can be repaired and driven again, but the write-off should be reflected in the price and the repair checked by someone qualified.

Categories C and D were replaced by S and N on 1 October 2017. Some older written-off vehicles may still have a C or D category because the accident happened before that date.

How do I check a car's mileage?

A free account shows the mileage recorded at every MOT, so you can spot a reading that is lower than an earlier one.

Silver and Gold checks compare the vehicle's mileage with over 180 million additional readings submitted by garages, dealers, auction houses, leasing companies and finance companies.

A discrepancy does not always mean clocking. A reading may have been mistyped, or the instrument cluster may have been replaced. It is a reason to ask questions and check the service history.

About Total Car Check

Is Total Car Check legitimate?

Yes. Total Car Check is the UK's leading consumer car checker. It is run by Total Car Check Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 07043189) and registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ZA008598).

We have been checking vehicles for over 15 years. Drivers ran more than 52 million free checks with us in 2025. Our apps are rated 4.9 out of 5 from over 75,000 ratings on the App Store and Google Play, and we have more than 6,000 reviews on Trustpilot.

How quickly will I get my report?

Your report appears on screen as soon as you have paid. We email you a PDF copy. If you have an account, the report is saved under My Checks so you can view and download it again.

Which vehicles can I check?

You can check cars, vans, motorbikes and all other vehicles registered in the UK, including Northern Ireland. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not covered.

Valuations are available for most cars and vans under 20 years old. For an imported vehicle, the check covers its history from when it was first registered in the UK.

Will a check show the owner's name and address?

No. Data protection law does not allow us to show this information. A check shows how many previous keepers the vehicle has had and when it changed hands, but not who they were.

Do multi-check vouchers expire?

Yes. Vouchers expire two years after purchase. Each voucher can be used for one check on any vehicle.

Can I get a refund?

A single check is delivered as soon as you pay, so it cannot be refunded once you have received the report.

For multi-check packs, you can cancel within 14 days and get a refund for vouchers you have not used. See our terms and conditions.
