What is ULEZ?

ULEZ stands for the Ultra Low Emission Zone. It’s an emission charging scheme in London that aims to improve air quality by discouraging the use of non-compliant polluting vehicles.

Where can I find out for free if my vehicle is ULEZ compliant?

Enter your registration plate above and we will run a free check for you. If your vehicle is ULEZ compliant, you will not have to pay a charge when driving in the ULEZ zone.

How much is the ULEZ daily charge?

  • £12.50 for most light vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) that do not meet the ULEZ emission standards.
  • Up to £300 for HGVs, lorries, vans and other larger vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes) under a separate London Emissions Zone scheme.

When does a ULEZ charge need to be paid by?

If you’re driving a non-compliant vehicle into the ULEZ, you must pay no later than midnight on the third day after the journey. You can pay up to 90 days in advance.

What area does ULEZ cover?

The ULEZ runs across all London boroughs right up to but not including the M25. So you won’t be charged if you drive on the M25. The charges only need to be paid if you drive a non-compliant vehicle within the ULEZ.

How does ULEZ compliance work?

The scheme is based on the Euro emissions standard a vehicle holds. This is a pollution rating applied to all vehicles registered to drive in the EU. The higher the Euro emission standard a vehicle has, the less it pollutes the air. The scheme’s operator, Transport for London (TfL), determines if a vehicle is compliant or not based on the Euro standard rating of a vehicle.

Petrol cars and ULEZ

For a petrol car, van, or minibus to be ULEZ compliant, it must be Euro emission 4 or above. Most petrol cars registered after 1 January 2006 will meet this standard.

Diesel cars and ULEZ

All diesel vehicles that enter the ULEZ must be Euro emission 6 for drivers (keepers) to avoid the charge. Most diesel cars registered after 1 September 2015 will meet this standard.

Motorcycles and ULEZ

Motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles, and quadricycles must be Euro emission 3 or above.

What are ULEZ operating hours?

The scheme runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December). There are over 3,400 ULEZ cameras in place across London that use Automatic Number Recognition Technology (ANPR). They read the number plates of vehicles to determine if a charge applies or not.

What happens if I don't pay a ULEZ charge?

You could receive a penalty of up to £180. If you pay within 14 days, this sum is reduced by 50% to £90.

Where can I find out more?
